back door man

now that tigger's married, he said he had a few new skills he could show me. we had bought a new back basement door several months ago, and were waiting for the right opportunity to install it. the existing set up was two rotten/draughty wooden doors, the outer with a sheet of luon as a window.

new door installed and framed. modern doors/frames are considerably wider than old doors/frames (just like modern americans, i suppose), so it was a snug fit, with little furring required after the old frame was removed. the left door casing is narrower than the right as a result. i didn't feel like screwing with the siding in order to match the casing widths.

the footing, of course, was in much worse shape than expected, so we dug down several inches, and several layers of stone foundation to pour a new concrete slab. does the mis-matched slab match the mis-matched casing? eventually that will be tidied up when we landscape the back yard. do come back and visit in 2014 to check.

and there was light. this makes a huge difference in the basement and back stairs. nice and draft free too. some of alice's pointing of brickwork visible here. and a nice solid concrete threshold to replace the crusty wooden one that was there.
